MEMORIAL DAY
It kind of irks me how everyone comes out of the woodwork to become "Patriotic" on a select number of holidays throughout the year. Do service members only serve a few days out of the year? Are they subject to harm and death only occasionally? What has become of our society, when only a few days out of 365 do a large majority of American's say " Oh yeah, here's to the troops" ?
If you look at the Greatest Generation of WW2, soliders, sailors, airmen and marines, were given huge parades and welcome home ceremonies. Now, soldiers (used to cover the spectrum of our service members here on in) only get a small portion of the recognition they deserve on the nightly news. More often than not, the news only shows when soldiers are killed. The American media does not show the hard work that is put in to liberating oppresed people across the globe, not only in Afghanistan. We have service members near and far, in harms way, away from loved ones constantly, and a large part of America's only see it fitting to put flags on their lawns when they host cookouts and barbeques. Does anyone else see something wrong here?
Almost all the memorials seen in city squares, public parks and rotaries, are from WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. Granted, there hasn't been a draft since Vietnam, and the idea of serving their nation crosses the minds of only a small percentage of service age Americans, but instituting mandatory service into our culture is a topic for a seperate blog all together.
The busiest places on Memorial Day (and Independence Day and Veterans Day) should not be the beaches or back yards, they should be the offices of our local recruiters.
Have a safe, happy, and fun filled Memorial Day everyone.
