A real live post!
OK, it's been two weeks, and a handful of events have occured. Pre-holiday, I finally sold my car on Wednesday. Thursday, Mike's car broke down and got junked. We're finally carless, if somewhat haphazardly. Mike is supposed to have a car for his job, so he's looking into getting a motorcycle. It's going to have a sidecar, and I'll wear my long white scarf, my mom is sending me goggles, and I'm going to swing by La Rosa for one of those aviator caps. It will be fabulous.
Switzerland. Saw a lot of family, mostly good. Got to see a lot of my cousins as adults, since we were all children last time I was there, six years ago. Got to see my gramma (Grossmutti), who I was worried was about to die. She's a tough broad. Picked up my Swiss German all over again. This happens everytime I visit. I can understand indepth conversations, but I have trouble speaking myself.
Visited three different regions of Switzerland. Most of my family lives in the German-speaking regions, but one is in the French, so they drove me all over the place. Montreaux was cool. They have a giant Freddy Mercury statue. Also headed to the Italian region. It was warmer there, and the residents act a lot more Italian.
Went to Basel, where we found a used bookstore with a good collection in English. Probably the highlight of my trip, if you know me. Purchased Junky by Burroughs, Tropic of Capricorn by Miller, New York Stories by Auster, and Nabakov's Dozen. Finished reading Junky the next day. Also read Angry Women, Ladders to Fire, and started The History of Sexuality by Foucalt and Beauty Myth by Wolf. Mikee learned why I don't get along with my dad, and had to suffer through two weeks of us arguing. My dad called him a smart ass when he stuck up for me.
Brought home some treasures and a temporary dislike for dairy products. Returned late Thursday night, went to work Friday morning, hopped a flight to Spokane, then drove to Canada and arrived in Nelson at 2:30 AM. More on that in a second installment.
