THE BLOOD TRAVELS
6) He wasn't dishonest nor would he ever do wrong by another. He just could never bring himself to pay his debts. Not debts to friends or relatives debts to hospitals phone companies, credit cards things like that. He always harbored a bit of resentment toward those institutions. In a way he felt they were indebted to him. The way those companies existed primarily by exploiting people like him. That's the way he saw it. The only debt he would ever repay was his debt to society and the few odd dollars from a friend here or there. But damn those other debits did get under his skin and tend to loom over him. You need to see a doctor every now and then, you just do. Of course you can't afford it but you need it cause it's there. You know it's available to you. Who could
stand the thought of dying cause you couldn't afford the cure. That just made him sick to think about. You know nice homes and schools are available to your wife and children but you can't afford it. Or maybe you can but you can only afford more than some other guy who has less than you. The guy who's got more than you makes you feel like the guy who's looking up at you and so on down the line. The standards are there in spite of your income. And even if you are well to do and live in a well to do neighborhood surrounded by well to do friends cause you can afford it so you do. You still don't buy things outright and in spite of your bank account and shining credit you are still in debit. On false move, a cancer invasion, your wife splits you are even deeper in debt
then you would have been if you were just a poor guy in debt all his life.
It's an oppressing subversive form of masochistic slavery. No mythical beast at the helm. Only human greed disguised as human need. Looking out the window he still had to cut the grass. These are the kind of thoughts that occupied his mind when all he's earned all month is hardly enough to cover the rent.

Simily, there are things that are far more important than the nice houses and fancy schools...how cliche', I know. To realize that there are things that must be done, things that require your time, like mowing the lawn or visiting the doctor when in grave need demostrate a true ambition to live. or die.
