Here we go.
I've recently become very interested in creative writing. I bought a pack of pencils and a yellow stock notepad to jot my ideas down. My intent is to develop stories and characters that I can one day transform into short stories, books and even film scripts. I've actually written scripts before, three to be exact, they were my outlet when I was a teenager and was suffering from sleep deprivation and insomnia. When your mind is working all the time you seem to dream in reality.
I used to sketch a lot too, back in those days. I almost feel like once I was done with high school and moved on to post-secondary that I lost a lot of my creativity. Maybe it was just because I didn't have as much time on my hands any more, maybe I lost my inspiration whatever it was. So this is me trying to take hold of that again. I'm going to use this space to practice.
First I'm going to find my voice, so I apologize to those who read this if it changes, but basic creative writing 101 states that a writer must find their voice before any writing can begin.
And so it begins.
One of the first characters I ever developed was Naoko. I was a young teenager without a girlfriend so I dreamt of one. My obsession with anime was the inspiration for the name of course, I don't think I ever did find out what it meant (Naoko [NAH - o - koh] origin: japanese gender: female meaning: obedient child, also associated with honesty). She was the perfect girl I dreamt of, short dark hair, blue eyes that shone like stars and a smile that could bring the toughest man to his knees. Of course when you're drawing someone you don't really think to give them a backstory but then I started drawing other characters, people who I called her friends. Then I gave her a home, parents, a dog, she was even going to school to become a nurse. I was 15 and here I was dreaming the perfect woman. It didn't last long, when I actually got a girlfriend my drawing style changed as i was influenced by the anime that she read. I created new characters and began to forget all about Naoko.
I always like bringing out the old sketch books and talking a walk down memory lane. I keep them on my book shelf that's behind my computer so they're never too far away. Maybe I should stick to what I'm good at, create my characters by sketching them first, give them a home and a world and then the stories just begin to flow.
Where are my manners?
All of this and you don't even know who I am. My name is Jason, I've started going by Jay when I introduce myself to new people. I grew up on a farm outside of Calgary and I now live in the city. I work for a professional sports club filming and editing video on a daily basis. I've always wanted to break into the film business (hence creative writing). I freelance on the side doing lots of video work, logo design and I dabble in web design as well. I'm a huge nerd, so Star Wars, comics, Doctor Who, reading, video games and even cosplaying are the base to my existence. Currently I'm single... ladies... haha. I have a cat named Atari who is just over a year old. Maybe I'll look into posting some photos of her on here at some point.
If you would like to know more about me, I'm an open book so feel free to comment and ask away! I'll need to figure out how often I'm going to post, but for now I'll aim for either later this week or early next week. Next time I'm going to actually talk about some of my different story ideas and scripts.
Cheers,
Jay
