So yesterday I was reviewing my philosophy material, since I have a test next Wednesday. I was driving with my daughter, age 7, to the library and I decided that I would "discuss" the subject with her, as that is reportedly the best way to learn something. We started with St. Anselm's ontological argument for the existence of God.

For those of you who aren't...

After two months of being caffeine free, I have been basically forced to become a caffeine consumer yet again. As it turns out, my narcolepsy has a greater impact on me than I had originally surmised. I've been falling asleep more frequently, have been groggy, unable to concentrate, missing school, etc. I fell asleep at work twice, once while standing. And the worst one is...

AAAAARGH!!

Damn, but this philosophy professor is a moron!

Today she presented the two following arguments in class.

Argument 1:
The sentence "All bodies are extended" is analytical.
To say that something is a body includes that it is extended.
There are no bodies that are not extended.
You don't have to know what "extended" means.
Forget any definition you know of "extended".
If you...

That really sucks....I have found that philosophy professors are mostly pompous asses who are bitter that they can't live off of their writing and have to teach...so they take out their frustration and make their students feel ignorant to make themselves feel better. Every philosophy professor I have ever had fit into this category.
virtuallylucid:
Yeah. Even worse is that she isn't technically a professor as she only has a bachelor's and is currently working towards her masters. Sometimes her answers to questions are "I'll have to ask about that"

So, there I was thinking that we were just gonna have a fun family drive up to Logandale. Amy found out she was going to be doing her rural rotation there, and that she could commute for it, so we wanted to see the drive. Well, part way there we started seeing the signs for the Valley of Fire and thought maybe that would be...

My philosophy teacher is at times hard to take. She obviously knows the material, but she approaches it as if it is integral to philosophy to be confusing. I disagree, of course, but that seems to be the case. Today she took a simple concept such as Locke's assertion regarding sensation and reflection, and ended up making this huge, convoluted rendering on the white board,...

that sounds irritating...i hated it in philosophy classes in college...there was always that one boy or girl who made me want to insight violence just so that the rest of us could have a normal conversation....and the prof was usually too pompous to respect. It was much nicer to discuss with friends over coffee than in a classroom enviornment.

Been too long since I've updated. Darnit.

Anyway, the Art from my ART 101 class is up now.

I'm in second semester and things are going smoothly. Philosophy, Anthropology, Astronomy, and Spanish this time. Only two weeks in, but fun so far.

Anyway, nothing much else is happening save that I am getting game-hungry to no end. My geekness is pushing itself to the surface...

hello

liked your observations on the greenpeace thread, especially your media savvy understanding of making the industry look like thugs. Which of course is true and is well evidenced.

However wondered why you thought we were locked into oil? surely this has something to do with why hemp is illegal? <shrugs>

wanted to say hi for a while anyway, was just an excuse.

Not much going on now. Folks are getting crazy at work and I'm pitching the SG book like mad, trying to boost sales. I leave for Idaho for the weekend (may or may not have internet access there) and will be back on Tuesday.

I have yet to upload the extra art projects I keep talking about. I'll have them up soon, though.

Grrness.

Well, the Mystere party happened...or..um...didn't as the case may be. I arrived at my previously announced 12:30 and, though I was told the party would still be RAGING till dawn, there were only about 5 people there, three of which left within a half hour of my arrival. It ended up being myself, Belinda (yes, the crush in my profile Belinda) and her roomie...

Man, oh man. People is funny.

So, I asked someone out. They said they were interested. They know I'm married, that my wife and I both date, and that everyone is cool with me asking people out. They call me at home one afternoon to see what I was doing. You know, "can we get together this afternoon"? I mention I have a couple of...

Okay, so I've just joined SG after looking through the Coffee Table book at work. How did I miss this before? I don't know. I'll write more in this here journal later so people can get a clue about me.

P.S. I'm selling a rock on ebay and it's actually selling. I mean...it's a rock.
