The problem with my short stories, the idea is bigger than the story but I'm always too impatient to even begin to write a book so it's a bad short story and nothing more than the beginnings of a book idea. Someday, someday. It will happen. Maybe.
In the meantime, brief excerpt!
I am Naimor, a Watcher with the Scientific Board of the Fourth Great Empire and this was my third circuit as Watcher of Earth. Some considered my current task a demotion. Assigned to an insignificant planet in an insignificant corner of the galaxy while observing a species that betting men were calling a high risk investment, this was not the career move most Watchers sought. The others did not know that I had requested this post. I wanted to know how a species could experience such highs and lows. Even more, I wanted to watch as humanity defied the odds and avoided oblivion, surviving to thrive in a new golden age. Humanity was in the midst of a storm, but all who survive the storm go on to enjoy the beauty of a new dawn.

Glad you like it! That paragraph is really the only bit sufficiently self-contained in the story to extract. Worked on developing the story idea a bit more today, tweaked it some with an interesting plot twist. Now for the hard part - sticking with the work of writing it out.
