As I sit here looking forward to my sister's arrival tomorrow with the nieces and nephew, I can't help but think how great the season is.

Hope you all have a very happy holiday!

So, I havent continued the story of our trip to the BVI. I promise I will do that. First however, a little update on life. Ive been sick for the past two weeks and finally am feeling better. When I get sick, I get really sick. Ive gone long spells without getting sick or ignoring minor sniffles. So, when Im hit, Im down and out....

Guess who is in the 2011 ARC race (in the open class)?

Oh yes.

On a more interesting note, great blog. Sounds like you've got some really useful re-focusing on your horizon. I have a feeling that this will be a great time for you.

Best.

Mustang, an 86 foor Camper Nicholson built to luxury standards but with a hull and rigging as per Whitbread specification back in the 80s. I helped re-commision her in Vancouver and San Francisco in the spring and early summer of 2009.

Very fast, with running backstays. These boats can lose the mast if the helm makes a boo boo. Here's hoping I can keep us on course.

Ugh, just lost a whole new blog. I'll write it again tomorrow.
smythe:
I've taken to writing in Word, or gmail or something where I can save it, then copy and paste. I've lost too many long blogs to do it any other way.

Thanks..All film with some post in CS3.

Back from the British Virgin Islands. Too tired to write much other than to say, it was a great trip in spite of the hurricane and the following bands of rainy weather. Spent most of time wearing sailing shorts and nothing else. Snorkeled for the first time, saw a giant sea turtle, and more fish than I can count. Did make the semi-obligatory stop at...

Savannah, Ga. I should only be there a couple of days, and then probably to Lake Charles, La to load grain.
Glad your trip went well.

I've always been lucky. Not in the win a gazillion dollars sort of way but in smaller ways. Part of this has been a near perfect run of saving things at the last moment. Whether it was games, assignments, projects or whatever, I've usually managed to pull things off in the end. This appears to have run out. I'm on the verge of letting my...

So yesterday I started a new part-time job. I was asked to be the high school racing coach for the non-profit where I volunteer. It's a great challenge and I'm looking forward to it. Yesterday's first day of practice was simple orientation and boat prep. The kids really bought into it and, even though the day was perfect for sailing, stuck in and got the...

It is good to be able to pass some of your knowledge on to kids. And hope that they can build on it and have some great adventures of their own. A very cool opportunity, good luck.

Oh man, I don't know if I could ever handle working with high school kids.

Yesterday was a great day. I arranged a road trip starting early in the morning up to Gettysburg. Three of us are history buffs and the other two were interested in the bike ride in the country. We had a great time. Gettysburg itself is a beautiful quaint little town surrounded by bucolic rolling countryside. The weather was pretty near perfect and the bike ride...

This evening we rushed down to the waterfront to secure the boats in advance of Earl's pummeling of the East Coast. By the time we'd gotten there the other volunteers were moving the boats from their slips into our much smaller slightly protected area. Honestly this didn't make sense siince we had to tie them up and then find creative ways of putting fenders in...

Aced the first test and got props from a 3 time olympian! (she raced one, was an alternate in one and coached a third) Gotta say I'm stoked. Oh wait, 3 more practical exams and 2 more written....better get back to the grind.

Oh, if you're ever in Washington, NC, Blackwater Jack's is a nice place for a beer and food. Parrotthead bar.
1sailor:
yeah, it's a shame. I will feel bad about that for awhile.

and congrats on your test.
jonas_thorazine:
Good luck to you man.

We'll start with the bad stuff then move on:

Still haven't found a new job. Starting to explore ways of making do until a full-time gig comes up. The good side, I'm still getting paid for another month even though i'm not doing, or having to do, anything.

The boat on which I race hasn't gone out once this season. REALLY SUCKS. The good side,...

Good Luck with your test, and with finding a new job.

One of these days I'm going to get a camera so that you all will have visuals to go along with these stories. Hopefully that'll make them more interesting. Honestly, I get that for non-sailors my life during sailing season is a flat out bore. I spend so much of my time on the water that if you're not into it you'll find your eyelids...

So sailing season has kicked in and the winds have been high so far. This weekend we didn't feel safe taking the students out in a small boat advisory on Saturday. We did take them out yesterday though and part of me wishes we didn't even though the conditions were fine if heavy. One boat capsized another got dismasted. Everyone was fine, but the capsized...
