That's fair enough, but at the same time 'you gotta do what you gotta do' I've just been travelling in Canada for a month, and pretty much the only conversation starter you will ever hear is "So where are you from?" - but it works. Gets people talking, and that's the only way you're going to make friends. Or just find someone else who looks like they're your kind of person and strike up a completely different conversation. They might appreciate the change!

Moles on a Friday night is good for live bands and various days in the Porter for acoustic bands and acts. The Porter Butt also does some live and DJ'd stuff.
Hobgoblin, The Bell, The Porter Butt, The Saracens Head, The Porter and The Rat and Parrot are all decent pubs. Avoid Wetherspoons, the Litten Tree, the Cork and Bottle and most other sports bars as the music is crap and they are always rammed full.
The best gay bar is Mandalyns closely followed by The Bath Tap.
