I try never to write about my trade (I'm a mortician), but I felt this was compelling and that I could hide identities well enough to make it work. So here goes (after my standard warning)

DANGER! POETRY ALERT! A POEM IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!

NEXT OF KIN

"I can't let you you in," I told the woman at the doorway of the funeral home....

So the other day, I'm walking downtown with a young poet named Lor, when some drunks call out to me

"What's up with the red suspenders?" (they are kind of my trademark).

"They keep my pants from falling down," I called back without slowing down.

But they were not satisfied yet.

"Do they mean you killed a man?"

"Not with the suspenders."

I have been staying in Chico, California for some months now. As many of you know Chico (and Chico State University) is known as a party town. There have been several "incidents" at fraternities here, including a few hazing deaths.

or as one bar doorman put it to me:

"This town has killed more Greeks than Thermopylae"

Wow, i don't know what to say. No matter what the organization or how old, i personally feel it's wrong to do some of the shit they do during hazing. i thought they only did that at the beginning of the semesters

So last night was my weekly open mic. It's just a Spoken Word night. Nothing special, no features no great act other than what people bring in with them.

But last night was very cool. A very full house and at least two-thirds of the people there were not connected to one of the poets. They had just heard that my show was very cool...

I have been incredibly busy writing of late. I have at least 8 new ideas (one of which could only be a novel so it will go on the back burner for now).

I want to do a story about cows, I don't know what I just want to.

But I'm working on my "Chaos Woman" poem, one of the lines is.

"She'd been fifty-one...
