Saw today the Army's official history of the Wanat disaster--nine killed in July 08. It was C company 2nd Battalion 503rd Infantry. The same battalion I was with in Baylough. I don't recall which company that platoon was from. The sergeant who got the Medal of Honor today was from B Company and was there in Zabul then too in 05. Anyway, I was in Bagram when they paraded the caskets down Disney drive to the airfield. I bet one of those guys deserved the medal too. It is sad so few people really can begin to understand the sentiments that soldier has expressed these few weeks since his award was made public. Korengal, where he was fighting, was a disaster and he never should have been there. We should have pulled the troops out of there months before that fight because we knew we were only making things worse in Korengal and doing nothing that would "win" the war. I think the leadership lacked the moral courage to make that call. Had the senior officers with the authority to make that decision had even half the courage that sergeant had, the fight where his two friends died never would have happened.
