Just got from the wonderful folks at Amazon the book "John Hughes A Life In Film". It's really put together nicely. If I am being honest his movies were tremendously influential to me (and most people born around 1972). I hope the young kids of today are aware of his work and watch his films as ravenously as I did "back in the day".
Saw Burt Bacharach this evening. The man is more than twice my age! You forget just how many massive songs that he wrote until you hear them performed in concert, songs like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do), What's New Pussycat and so forth. Such sadness that one of my favorite actors died today, though he lived a long and full 83 years. Star Trek helped this lonely 16 year old out on a nightly basis back in the latter part of the 80s (Channel 11 in New York ran Star Trek at 12:00 midnight), and for that I will be forever grateful.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the best movie I have seen this summer. Intelligent, thought-provoking entertainment with good characters who actually have understandable motivations (even, in fact, especially, the Apes). Lots of fun, don't be afraid. It's smart but there's still scenes of chimpanzees riding horses whilst shooting machine guns (heretofore only seen in dreams dreamt after eating pumpkin seeds). Andy Serkis...

This was that time I came back through time from the 1930s after allowing the woman I love to be hit by a car so she could die and not start a pacifist movement that would delay the United State's entry into WW2 which would have allowed Germany to win the War thus changing the future as we know it (the future, in this case, meaning present day). I saw Veruca Salt this evening (TLA in Philadelphia). Awesome show. Extra points for the simple fact that the original lineup is back together, which I wouldn't have predicted. One of my favorite bands! Plus, they played plenty of Eight Arms To Hold You songs, an album I dearly love.
