I've had this feeling lately that my appreciation for delicacy and subtlety in movies, books, and music has been spolied by exposure to the more blaring qualities of mainstream media. As an example- I watched Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries earlier this week. While I could appreciate the storytelling and pacing, I couldn't help but be bored by it at times. It's like my brain is...

I read the other day that the mysterious boxes I used to see entering my old high school cafeteria that were labeled "Grade D- but edible" really had no reason for labeling. I learned that USDA labels meat in choice cuts, I forget exactly what, but don't really have letter grades like the ones I used to see. odd. and scary. I now wonder why where they graded at all and what was in those boxes really?
I like the funny fast food chains that label some burgers as meat supliment or 'meat' and not beef.

Good job, you got it right! smile And you're right, you do have to assume he didn't answer his own question wink

Has anyone out there read any good books recently? I feel like everything I've read this semester has either been from a newspaper or a scientific journal. Drop me line if you've got any ideas (I'm not picky- fiction, nonfiction, comic books, whatever- I'm omnivorous). smile

Update: After reading BillHaverchuck's thread, I may have to pick up the new Sarah Vowell book to start with.

Yeah! I saw the Plan on July 11, 2003 (I remember because it was my boyfriend's birthday). It remains the best concert I've ever seen.

New Mountain Goats album comes out soon... agh can't wait...

Glad to be of service.

I just signed the lease for an apartment for next year! smile I'm so excited to move out the place I'm at now and get away from my crazy landlord.

So when my friends and I went to sign the lease with our soon-to-be landlord we noticed that she had several really interesting floral prints on her wall. We asked what they were and she says,...

Unfortunately they didn't play 0+2=1, the only song they played off of that album was The Fall, which is still an amazing one

So my girlfriend Julia and I were walking home from Rudy's tonight (there was a band called Hygiene Wilder playing... pretty clever) when we were approached by a homeless man. I was about to give him a couple of dollars (the city of New Haven forces the homeless to pay to stay in a shelter... but that's another rant entirely) when he grabs my hand...

We had a guy around here we kinda knew. Called him bearded Ed, but we said said it fast a little different so it came out 'beer-dead' A bunch of us invited him into denny's with once for some chow one night, I figured if actually put food in his mouth, its better than giving him money he'll go buy booze with.

oh yea, he didn't want to join us.
haven't seen him a while. I've found out homeless a ery migratory, not in some asshole meaning, but seriously. They'll go spend 5 months in a different state, like 2 states away.

Hello new friend, whoever you are.

Greetings from Sodom
How we wish you were here
The weather's getting warmer
Now that the trees are all cleared
There's no time for a conscience
And we recognize no crime
Yeah we got dogs and Valvoline
It's a pretty damn good time

Men of reason, not of rhyme
Keep the spoils and share your crime
Goodman, Badman, lost without
A hope for passage on...

So... graduate teaching assistants at Yale have voted to go on strike beginning Monday (I didn't vote- I'm not a TA).

The strike vote itself was actually sort of frustrating- all of the public debate about the terms of the strike seemed to be just for show- most people had voted and left before the discussion really got underway. On the whole, I found myself...

At 5 PM tomorrow, 100 scientists in lab coats are going to march through the streets of New Haven on their way to a graduate students' union meeting. During this meeting, graduate teaching assistants will likely vote to go on strike beginning Monday. I'll be there for the vote, although I still don't know how I feel about it.

The idealist part of my brain...

I went to Bar to see French Toast and Bloodthirsty Lovers tonight with my girlfriend and some of her friends from the political science department. It was a pretty awesome show (French Toast is great live) and good a way to procrastinate a little bit. smile

I'm supposed to be writing a response to two research articles that discuss the neurological bases of schizophrenia, but I...

I remembered we have a whole spindle of What Day Is It from when we were at Bob's that he gave to us to hand out, I know it's a little difficult to get ahold of, so I could send you one easily next time we're at the post office, if you want. You could send me your address through the contact tab.
legionnaire:
That's a disturbing dream.

Let me know if you want any help with the schizophrenia articles, I've been subjected to an endless barrage of data about that particular topic so maybe I can be of some assistance.

As for your comment, that's exactly my question. If in destigmatizing psychiatric disease we're actually helping to create a new problem that wasn't there already (or just lend a false legitimacy to a preexisting problem that was being blown off before.) Still, I think treating sick people should take priority. EVen if some of the side effects of that treatment are unpalatable.

Time for a rant.

Seriously. If I hear George Bush talking about a "culture of life" one more time, I'm going to lose my shit. You can't take a poorly-defined and sometimes contradictory ideal (how do you reconcile the war in Iraq and the death penalty with a culture of life?) and turn it into a sensible political concept simply by repeatedly inserting it into...

Went to Rudy's... ate far too many greasy french fries. My stomach hates me right now. puke

I'm enjoying Patrick Wolf's Wind in the Wires quite a lot at the moment. Very gloomy and melancholy- lots of strings and piano layered over glitchy electronic backgrounds. Great vocals- sort of a Jeff Buckley-eque mournful quality to them (pitchfork compares him to Nick Cave as a vocalist, but...
