She is a human-klaxo sapien hybrid and member of the APE Special Forces, fighting primarily on the front lines. As an elite Parasite codenamed "002", otherwise known as "Partner Killer", Zero Two has always accepted solitude due to her Klaxosaur horns and blood. Despite having no regard for human life or life itself and being used to fighting solo, she took an interest in Hiro and offered him the opportunity to pilot with her, making him her new partner and "darling".

After Hiro managed to pilot her more than three times, the duo became the newest members of the 13th Plantation, piloting the mighty FRANXX Strelizia. Over time, Zero Two developed romantic feelings for Hiro. However, her determination to become fully human, along with Hiro's apparent fear of her growing wild features, resulted in the couple's separation for a brief period.

When their relationship as partners began to take a turn and slowly fall apart, they realized their forgotten memories of their childhood encounter. The two chose to sacrifice their lives to save and ensure the survival of humanity. A thousand years later, the souls of Hiro and Zero Two are reincarnated as a pair of children who are reunited and rekindle their romance.

Darling in the Franxx tells us the story of a post-apocalyptic world where the human race must defend itself from giant monsters known as Klaxosaurs, using giant machines to, who knows, have a chance to fight these monsters that are destroying what left of humanity
