Ancient History
Go ahead throw open the door and draw back the layers
Of concert tee shirts and dirty jeans to find an archeological dig site.
Theyre searching for the remains of a shattered youth,
The fossilized remnants of a life of agony.
Theyve uncovered enough shit from the dirt to fill
A history museum, and still they keep looking
As if there is meaning in the tarnished
Emotions, memories, experiences of this wasted youth.
Keep digging, youll find something,
Keep digging, its all there,
Keep digging, dont be afraid of what you find,
You wanted to see it, these relics of the past.
Keep digging to discover
All the dreams, broken hearts, lies, forgotten promises.
Keep digging past the one night stands, the drugs, the deceit,
And what have you found?
Keep digging deep into the tears, scars, the aching desires,
And still you cannot see.
Keep digging past the fake smiles, the joyful laughter, the awkward silences
Past all those facades of happiness, and youre getting close to the meaning of it all.
Keep digging until you reach what it is everyone has come looking for:
The meaning of it all, the history of this story, the creation of all this junk.
What is it you have found there:
Buried beneath the sunlight,
Hidden away under the filth and grim
Swimming in all the piss and shit,
Tucked neatly underneath layers of limestone and sand,
The missing piece of the puzzle
The one thing that can solve all this doubt,
All this mystery. Everything defined by this one find.
Its the skeleton of a boy curled into a tight ball.
The tears on his cheekbones preserved as drops of salt crystals,
And now that you found him
Has everything been solved?
Do you understand now?
Is it all clear like cloudless Sunday mornings
When the sun melts the blue of the sky
So that it spreads across the horizon?
But this wasnt the answer you were looking for was it?
You came all this way to find what?
A boy crying alone in the dark,
But what were you hoping to find
The meaning of it all?
No, this is just my dirty closet,
And I have nothing to give,
No lesson to teach,
Expect for the tears Ive shed
And the mistakes Ive made.
And maybe someday everyone can see all this when the time comes
Like I do now when it is too late to change anything.
