What do you mean by cities to check out? Are you thinking of movie out here or just visiting? Is it something to do with college or schooling? I can definitely give you a list of pros and cons if you like. Of course, you'll have to give me some criteria to be able to give you a list. 
Sounds like you had a lot more stuff to ship than I did. I had 8 boxes to ship and it cost me about $150-$200 but I also had my car completely full of stuff when I drove across the country.
