Smoke 'em if ya got 'em...
Just read an article about the Florida legislature working to pass a stiff ban on smoking...anywhere. Indoors, outdoors, listening to the Doors, whatever. Including in bars, just like California. The ogre of second-hand smoke and it's effects on others has raised its pointed head once more.
Now, while I can sympathise with people who don't want to huff second-hand smoke, my thoughts on regulating it are similar to my thoughts on regulating porn, music, art, or any other thing that some people find offensive. If you don't like it, don't put yourself in a position where you are exposed to it. But, if others like it... FUCK OFF AND LET THEM ENJOY THEMSELVES IN PEACE!
I find it incredibly stupid and hypocritical to tell people they can't smoke in a goddamn BAR. It's perfectly fine for a person to drink liquor in a bar, pollute their liver in a bar, dull their wits to the point where they might hurt themselves or others in a bar (or elsewhere)... but they can't smoke in a bar. Not necessarily because it's bad for them, but it might be bad for others around them!
And driving their drunk ass into an SUV full of people isn't bad for the unlucky targets?
I've heard the 'concern for the workers in bars' stance, and again - it's bad for them to huff second-hand smoke, but it's hunky-dory for them to serve up the demon liquor? Bullshit, friend Reader, bullshit.
It's setting legal precedent, too. Grounds for power-grabbing, grounds for control freaks to go after more "vice" and outlaw it on the grounds of protecting people from it. Did no one pay attention in history class? Remember prohibition? A bunch of uptight shitheads decided that booze was the devil and made it illegal. Boy, that worked real well. Not only did it glamorize liquor, it also gave organized crime more money than they knew what to do with. Fortunately, some folks with a shotglass full of sense got that idiotic piece of shit stricken from the books. That was then, though... this is now.
Pretty soon it'll be illegal to fuck, because your kid might grow up and kill someone.
