Hephaestus Lovenote
(Up) until the brain is no
Longer an anvil, made-sword
Cleaving the ledger
Of forgetfulness, the pages
Unfurling, curling at the clip
Of their texture, which
Is memory despised
By memory, which is
The heated spark
Of the hammering, and
The hiss of fatigue as
Book and blade wound
The water. Fish
Is the primal lip. Bull
Is the murder of
China. Twins are
The rumor that
Begins and ends
With itself, itself
A small story
Of Self's
Small
Self, polishing
It's steel
With
A rough
Zodiac
Of
Lack, and
A counting
Off
Of years....
(There is a happiness: An
Evenly-home
Spread
On
Chest
Like a
Hot
Snowfall. Heart
Beaten
Like a
Drum
By the thumb
Of an
Inner
Drummer, a
Runner
Who
Only
Takes
A single
Stride, that is
A single
Breath, some
Thing
Held in
To divide into
Rhythm...)

Hephaestus is probably my favourite of the Greek gods because despite being less prominent or glamourous than some of his contemporaries, he represents a constant; (a rhythm, if you like) which is paradoxical, considering the group of deities with which he is associated are infamous for their petulant, changeable dispositions. He always seemed to be less egotistical or infantile (which are very human weaknesses) than Zeus, et al; therefore was more 'godlike' in my view.
I like 'Hephaestus Lovenote' very much, particularly the idea at very end:
