I would highly recommend Hanoi and the North. If you really want to see Saigon, then your idea of flying to Saigon then overland to Hanoi could be a good route. The Re-unification express is probably the best way to do it. It costs quite a lot given the cost of living over there, but it's relatively hassle free. (I think it cost about $100 for us both from Hoi An to Hanoi.

We were there for about a day so we made some inquiries and were able to get a 'pass' out of the airport for about 8 hours. BK is mad- life seems to go at 100 miles an hour. Am sure Ridley Scott went there just before Blade runner....
