I've always said something to a similiar effect, something about why music ends up sounding the same. There's a new book out called Bags: A knitter's dozen. I haven't tired anything out of it but everything looks pretty easy.
I say go with felt bags because they're really really easy, you can make mistakes and its no big deal, and the shapes are easy. I LOVE feltes tote bags. I usually make my own, but I can figure out a simple pattern for you if you want.
And I can't say enough good things about Felted Knits. Awesome felted goodness for gifts!!!

I spent the whole weekend knitting. I did the absolute worse job ever of picking up stiches, but if someone wants to look at my armpit to see it, then they're just weird.
And I love the recycled yarn...so pretty...but SUCH a bitch to work with. Definately worth it in the end, but while I was working with it I wanted to shove sharp objects in my eyes.
