I hate sounding like a sectarian liberal. I hate buying into dogma and I am well aware that there are many stupid, unscrupulous, insane, and extremist liberals. I really think that there is room for improvement in the progressive philosophy, but I will always sound far left of center because my sense of irony hasn't been deadened to the point where I can talk about the Republicans' policy with a straight face.
They support the death penalty ... and they LOVE Jesus.
They believe that everyone has a right to life ... and they oppose gun control.
I was watching "Superman" cartoons the other day and I realized that, in the absence of any political figures to look up to, most of my moral values ended up coming from the Man of Steel: right wrongs; help the helpless; stand up for truth, justice, and the American way, even when one of those contradicts one of the others; always catch your girlfriend, no matter how many times she falls out of buildings on a given week; stand directly in the path of bullets; etc. I think this also explains why I think it's perfectly acceptable to wander away in the middle of a conversation without saying goodbye. No, seriously, I can't be the only one who noticed how many scenes ended with someone wondering, "Where did Clark go?"
What I'm trying to say is that I think it's about time that our government officials stopped fixating on non-issues like abortion and immigration and started coming up with solid policy on evil aliens shrinking the Earth's cities and keeping them in bottles. Who's with me?

I think it still does; I've just internalized it so that I don't have to consciously think about Jean-Luc when making moral judgements.
