Why does a broken heart have to hurt so much? My poem...
A Thousand More
The thousand miles felt not so far
When your face beamed at me
Pixel by pixel upon the screen.
And the states in between
Felt compressed and minuscule
Through endearments on the phone.
Somehow together we were not alone.
Yet you were peeled from me
By a distance uncrossed
And another's breath mingling with yours.
With a heart that adores
I believed I could touch
Your arms, your face, and your skin.
Somehow I believed I could win.
Upon the silent phone
And pixels void of your eyes
My fears were founded.
The thousand miles are compounded
Elongated by the knowledge
Of him kneeling before your door.
Somehow it feels a thousand more.
Across the quiet distance
I know that you cry and mourn
The space we had overcome.
I know you miss what we won
Against odds and over states
With intimacy that technology crossed.
Somehow I know you miss what we lost.
Yet he gets to be the one
For whom you shower, perfume, and dress
With no space to overcome.
Instead, he gets to be the one
With whom you smile, touch, and kiss
And sleep next to face to face.
Somehow he has robbed my place.
The thousand miles felt not so far
Before he held your hand
And left me a thousand more.
Beyond these words I implore
To not forget my face or endearments
Ensconced in pixels and a phone.
Somehow I have ended up alone.
Across this quiet distance
Please know that I cry and mourn
For a love I had founded.
Despite these miles compounded
And these states so painfully wide
I want you blessed in all you do.
Brandy, I want happiness for you.
