"Harm is the norm. Doom should not jam."

V. Nabakov, from PNIN

I'd tell you what context that quote comes from, but it's kinda more fun just with those lovely phrases dangling unencumbered, right?

Nabokov is one of the few authors whose writing can be broken down into stand alone phrases that are themselves works of art.
heatherann:
I love Nabokov. It takes a special kind of writer to make you feel a weird sort of kinship about a character who is essentially a pedophile.

I'm giving up.

Maybe it's true that you find what you want by not looking.

let her find you!

Not looking has always been successful for me. It's always the days you feel you're ugly and undesirable that people approach you. Chin up Mike Doughty...YOU ROCK!smile

So... they are skittish? (Sorry! That one was wide open).

There's just so many people in cities! I mean, there's gotta be one there for you. I find it hard to fathom you don't get approached? Try switching up your frequently traveled routes?
karma:
I replied in your previous post smile

Dear Laydeez--

I have NO FUCKING SUCCESS at online dating. Almost NO WOMEN write me back!

OK. So. I'm asking you for advice. Look at my profiles? THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME?!

Am I one of those dudes who's homely and doesn't know it? Oy.

My Nerve profile.

My OKCupid profile.

PLEASE BE BRUTAL! I NEED IT!

Your good buddy Mikey

Ridonkulous. I'd switch out the photos to ones that seem more approachable. You gots the cutest smile, Mikey.

P.S. Listened to that mix you made me this week. Still good.
karma:
I agree with Erica. Your pics look way to professional, kinda gives off the "I'm trying really hard to be famous" feel to those that don't know your actually semi famous. Other then that, its perfect. If I wasn't happily married I be all over it. I remember Dido saying she had a crush on you...maybe you could look her up? wink

PS ^^^ How do I get a mix????????

Recorded 20 songs with Pat Dillett yesterday--just to demo 'em, we're going into the studio for-real-like in the fall--he regaled me with tales of his work with Foxy Brown and Mary J. Blige.

Thinking about drummers. I think I wanna hire a Famous Expensive Guy--he'll work quicker.

Can't wait to hear them!smile
_bossanova_:
Flappers & Philosophers, Tales of The Jazz Age, The Basil & Josephine Stories: all glittery & neat. I think Tales of The Jazz Age is especially smart.

I saw you discovered Carson McCullers while you were at Yaddo. She's one of my all-time, favorite favorites. McCullers wasn't a prolific writer of short stories but what little she produced is profound stuff. The house where she grew up, in Columbus, GA, is on the same block as my grandparents' house.smile
