I was in middle school during Desert Storm, and also have no idea what it's like for Scout Snipers. 5811 over here. oink There were some parts in the movie where I was like "whatever", and others where I was one of the only ones in the theatre laughing...Parts where my friend looked horrified. tongue I appreciated the parts that reminded me of my time in the Corps...Things I missed, things that were irritating (i.e. fuck fuck games). It seems that Marines tend to pick apart movies having anything to do with the Marine Corps, and civilians who dont know any better eat it up as fact. The general consensus from the Marines (especially the grunts) on the internet forums Ive looked at is that Swafford is full of shit. Either way, I think Ill add the book to my reading list.

a comment like that is exactly what i didnt want. i just had houndreds of people on my friend list whom i have never talked to, and it was easier to just delete all and then have people ad me again

To be honest, I wish I didn't know anything about this dude. I thought he was a prick - but didn't know he was pathological.

*shudder to think*

I read an article from an ex-Marine who hated the book but thought the movie was better, if only because the book was so bad. Was that your impression as well?

I'm still debating whether I want to see it myself. I dunno. I liked the concept when I read about the movie-in-progress, but it's getting mixed reviews and most of the military people I know are panning it pretty hard, so... eh.

Re: pondering and pontificating -- let's just say that I'm looking for honest answers. And thoughtful ones, if you're inclined to give me that. But mostly honest. wink

Hey, thanks for your message on my journal. I'm usually all about the "teach someone to fish" thing but I've mulled this situation over and over in my noggin these last days and I'm not sure how I could accomplish that if I encounter her again. Your thoughts??????

I've seen ads for the movie but I usually don't check out war flicks.
Bridge on the River Kwai was good though.

Again Hollywood disappointed me. Cant someone collaborate on a film that is entertaining, has substance, and hits the mark???

I think you got there priorities in about the right order...with making a shitload of money coming just before being entertaining.

I thought the movie was a little flat in that the plot really wasn't the point. it was just about the two or three main characters. everyone else was just a caricature. Marines will get that, but most normal people will see it and think Marines are a bunch of insane undisciplined fucks.

I'll allow the insane judgement.

there's been some talk that this'll be this generations "Full Metal Jacket". I can see where the comparison comes from, but I don't ever see Jarhead eclipsing Full Metal Jacket as THE Marine movie.

my Marine buddy and I laughed at some of the more outragous stuff as did some of the other military people in the audience on opening night. some people were actually turning to look and see what whackos thought having to build a sandbag pyramid was so funny.

hope you had a good birthday. I'm off to the ball this weekend in Louisianna. should be good drunken times

Oh, it's still there if people feel like spelunking to find it. I just assume most people have other things to do with their time. And I'm a little self-conscious about writing at such length on any topic; who wants to read that much of me babbling?

Yes, the traditional Japanese diet is among the healthiest on Earth. But as they shift to a Western diet, their rates of heart disease, stroke, and all other obesity-related complications are skyrocketing accordingly. It's ironic that the most "high-status" foods (usually red meat) are the most wasteful to produce and among the worst for you, especially once they've been run through the processing cycle.

where are you this weekend?? any adventures planned?

i was thinking about going to see that. even if it does "miss the mark," it stars one fine piece of ass, if i do say so myself.

i'm not sure about the bacon, but a bacon sandwich with avocado on it could only be the best thing in the entire world.
