Congratulations. Enjoy the time off.

On another note, when did you say you were moving this way? In time to see the Slackers at the Middle East in May? Or how about the Pietasters in June?

Thank you

Hey what was your thesis on?

And it was a thread about the "worst pain" ever. I was venting about how I have been through stuff that would theoretically allow me to always win those type of "Who's been injured the most" or "I was so sick" contests that seem to come up from time to time, but decorum dictates that I don't mention it. 5 years ago I had throat cancer and I could totally trump *anyone's* stories about car accidents or dental adventures, but I can't.

I don't want to be that mature. It burns.

Thank you

Hey. Good luck on your defense. I just defended in March, and it feels great. The day after, I woke up with this sinking feeling that I had something to do, or somewhere to be. The morning after that, however, I felt calmer than I had in years.

> I'll try to make it to the Slackers show, but no guarantees. Where is it at?

It will be at the Middle East (downstairs) in Central Square, Cambridge. If you haven't been there, it's a pretty decent place to see a show.

>The short version is ... I pull on pieces of biopolmer goo + cells and see what happens. Thrilling, I know.

Ha ha! Don't sell yourself short. Even if I don't know one cell from another, it's still pretty fascinating.

You said this was a Doctoral thesis right? That's really cool. I wish I had an advanced degree. I went to school for 7 years and I only have a pair of useless Bachelor's degrees to show for it.

You will be a man of letters...

Thank you

Best of luck with your defense; what is your thesis topic?

What's the significance of your username? It's my surname, minus the 'x's' of course.

I'm still trying to figure out where I want to post doc. Actually, I've already got three labs in mind. I just need to get over the huge activation barrier between where I am now and sending out CV's.

>Cool! I've been to the Middle East several times. Its where I caught that infamous Hepcat/Scofflaws show.

Oh yeah, der on me.

>I'm glad you think so! Honestly. I've lived with it for so long that I can't think of anything *less* interesting than my thesis. Haha!

I think that happens on any project one works on for extended periods of time. Sometimes I wonder if it is less fun for the people that make my favorite music or movies because they saw the un-glamorous parts.

Maybe after you've taken a step back and had some time off it will become sexy again.

Thank you

I met with a seminar speaker from UT Southwestern recently. As it turned out, we both went to the same High School and grew up in the same small Chicago suburb. Small world.

Just don't expect any poetry or short stories or pictures of my naughty bits.

Well, Doc, not only do I not expect any of the above, I'd be appalled and disgusted at the sight of any of them. Okay, not the short stories. I'd read them biggrin

Go The Reds! 2-1 and 0-0. Not bad against Juventus biggrin biggrin ooo aaa Cisse and Alonso back, too. Woohoo

Your thesis sounds like something useful for humanity! I'm studying pipe flow right now in my ugrad program; they're about the same in difficulty right? tongue

Compton is a sweet name indeed. It's Welsh in origin. Oh no....I sound like one of those genealogy freaks smile

Again, congrats!

Yeah, matrimony is definately in the cards for my girl and I. It's just the extra stuff that keeps it from happening. The planning, the families, the money, they all make it harder. If it were just a matter of *getting married* we'd do it tomorrow.

So your new pic reveals more of your cranium. Can we expect a progression?

Thank you

I'm doing civil; it's a hydraulics class. I took the standard fluid mech class last term. Currently, we're learning to use pump operating curves in simple design. It's a blast. whatever tongue

How do you apply fluid mechanics to your research? Is it in the production/growth of the tissue? Your thesis seems really fascinating.

Oh, I'm sending you a friend request 'cause i'm in need for some (or one). tongue

Dude, your thesis sounds sweet (for lack of a better description)! Thanks for the info; I have a ton of questions but I'll spare you with only one:

How do you model an artery? Do you use some mechanical setup or use some kind of biological system? I'm guessing numerical modeling is important. We only saw the Navier-Stokes equation but didn't use them in our intro to fluids class. No clue how you solve them. I got a headache just looking at them tongue

I actually googled Compton and only found one reference that stated its origin is from someplace called Devon in England; which appears to be close but not in Wales proper so I don't know....my Uncle (if I'm remembering it right) said when I was a kid it was Welsh. He has a PhD in like Latin, so I figure he must know how to research ancient junk.

When is your defense?
weirdunclebob:
Baros... ball... well, they both start with a B so there IS a connection there somewhere... Not seen much since Euro 2000 when he was playing for someone else confused tongue

Oh, I guess I was wondering what kind of experimental setup do you use, to generate data to analyze? Or is most of your thesis about analytical models (if that makes any sense)?

Pipe flow is complicated enough for me at this time! smile

Desmond Dekker huh? That's cool. I haven't had much luck catching First Wave acts. The Skatalites were scheduled to play down the street from my house a few years ago, but it was canceled due to snow. They rescheduled, but that was cancelled too. Jimmie Cliff and the Maytals have both played here too, but I ended up being somewhere else those days.

If you do go, you should post a review. That group needs more talk of good Ska artists.

Thank you
