Things have really sucked lately. Over a 36 hour period my dog went from totally healthy to totally blind. It tunns out what is probably happening is that her immune system is attacking heathy cells and has caused fluid to build up behind the retnia, causing her retina's to detach. It happened so fast. She seemed fine just a few days ago. Now she can't see even an inch in front of her face and has to be guided everywhere. Link on animal blindness.
Now for the (hopefully) good news. After several vet visits, including a canine optometrist, and $1000+ later, three very stressful days, driving all around St. Louis, and many tests later she probably will recover. She is on several meds now and probably will recover in about two weeks, but there is a chance she will never recover. So she started on an oral steroid to supress her immune system today (after we learned that it was not caused by her blood test that it was not caused by an infection, since giving a steroid to a dog with an infection would be fatal) so 13 more days to go before we should see improvement in her vision. Until then...well , yeah I don't really know what to say. This really sucks.
Here's some pics of her when she was healthy. By the way her name is Samantha, but we call her "Sammy." She is a nine and a half lab mix.
Here she is with our cat.
This fucking sucks.
