OK, Violence Against Women Act... Here's the deal. The act was created because communities had counselors, but very few of the conselors were educated to deal with rape and domestic violence victims. Local governments had people on hand that helped victims of violent crimes--men and women--but when you talk about domestic violence and rape you need an entirely different counseling construction.

In a lot of domestic violence cases the women feel trapped and hopeless, and do not have the wherewithal to leave because they don't have the resources to live outside of their home. And of course this puts many children at risk as well. There was--and still is--a lack of shelters that accommodate abused and assaulted women. These places provided a safe haven against their abusers, medication, job training (so they could learn to live on their own if they are a homemaker) and counseling. The act helps fund these sorts of places.

In my opinion this act is crucial because violence against women is manifested by men who historically have taken advantage of an unequal power structure in which men and even some women feel that the male is the dominate sex. This has lead to discrimination and has prevented--in many ways--the advancement of women. Violence against women is a mechanism used to push women into subservient and subordinate positions to men. And it needs to stop. This act helps a lot.

As for your situation, if it makes you feel any better when my husband and I first started hanging out, he met me up at the bowling alley one night and because my best friend was there I was a total bitch to him (my husband). But he forgave me because he understood that sometimes people just act stupid. Hope it all works out for ya!
