So the OMSI (Oregon Museum and Science Institute for all you non-residents) has a relationship with the Bridgeport Brewpub and Bakery to do lectures at the pub.

That's right. Science and beer in the same room! Have I mentioned I love it here?

Last nights lecture was on nanotechnology. Sure, I come across nanotech articles in scientific journals every so often and think I'll read them but they get boring really fast. But this lecture had beer, so I had to go.

It was GREAT! The speaker talked about using nanotech to mimic nature for practical purposes. We've probably all heard about researchers looking for ways to mimic photosynthesis to generate energy...glorified solar energy, but this speaker talked about using nanotech to CLEAN!

Ever noticed how plants don't get dusty? Their structure is such that when it rains the water swirls over the dirt to wash it off the plant...plants are self cleaning. Some researchers are trying to duplicate that in glass for windows. Cool.

Someone in the crowd asked "how do you see nanotechnology and chemical engineering merging?" Hehehe. The speaker replied "In a FedEx truck." Good point! How the hell are you gonna transport a nanodevice? How are you even gonna FIND it when it arrives? Can't you hear the angry calls now? "I opened the box and it was EMPTY!"

And then came the moment I had been waiting for. Some guy in a shirt that had somehow gotten too unbuttoned stood up to ask a question. He was holding his beer in front of him unsteadily and slurring out a question about using nanotech to store energy. He was probably some super genius extrodinaire, and here he was trying to form a sentence over his beer glass! I love this place.

I thought immortality was a stretch too, but if they asked me to be a guinea pig I would jump at the chance.

Dealing with the consequences is not what my concern is. The truth is I promised to keep the secret. I do think I convinced him to tell his family. I suspect some of them know and I am absolutely cerain that their love for him will stand by him. He and I were each an "adopted" member of the others family so I know them pretty well.
