On Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP)
This and Gunstar Super Heroes (GBA) are the only two games I've played for the past two weeks (aside from a couple sessions of Warcraft III earlier this week). Equal parts obsession and anomie are to blame. On the one hand, these games are both fucking amazing, for different reasons. On the other, I just feel burned out on everything else, even real-time strategy.
GTA: LCS is an engineering miracle. Take that feeling you got when you played GTA3 for the first time and put it in a little box you can take to the dentist. It's that simple.
But some of the little things that made GTA3 special are missing.
I miss Michael Madsen as Toni Cipriani. I miss Debi Mazar conjuring the spirit of her coke princess Jersey girl character from Goodfellas as Maria. And I miss that charming oaf of a mute main character from GTA3. Rockstar North: you can make your protagonist speak, but that doesn't automatically give him a personality.
Gunstar Super Heroes deserves its own entry -- will follow up tomorrow.
