Damn, that sucks big ass!!! There is nothing worse... What really sucks is Nikon gear is so damn rugged. I had an F4 that you could fucking pound nails with and then shoot. But electronics and muddy water are no good...
Did you buy it on a credit card? You should find out if it had purchase protection... a lot do these days. If not, and you end up replacing it, you should look into adding it to your renters insurance (or getting renters insurance in the first place). It sounds silly, but it's not as expensive as you might think... and a $500 deductable is better than $1800...
But don't beat yourself up too much... sometimes you have to take risks to get the best shots. It happens to the best of us.
yeah i broke my camera once and it wasn't even half that price and i was really upset, so i can only image how fucking horrible it is for you, who actually needs your camera. Hopefully it works out...
