Just a quick update while I wait for my laundry to finish up...

So, this is an interesting week. On a high note, I (finally) got the word that I passed my theory exam. So woot! One step closer to ABD...

On a down note, I got the *comments* for my theory exam. They were withering to say the least. Harsh enough to make me wonder: "Just how the fuck did I pass this thing in the first place?" I would never say the comments were wrong or irrelevant, but some of them seemed to ignore both 1) the terms of the questions and 2) the temporal limits of the exam process. But whatever.

In other news, the proposal plugs onward. Tomorrow I am meeting with *two* different faculty, to talk over what I'm working on and help me shape this incohate idea into something resembling an actual argument. So it goes.

Otherwise, not a damn thing is going on here. This quarter is wearing me down. It's not that I'm drowning in work - it's that I have a lot of little things going on, so I feel very frentic (here, there, back again). Not cool. Winter quarter - where I'll just be auditing one class - sounds like paradise right now.

Congrats! And I wouldn't sweat the comments too much. My advisor was scary-smart, and so getting totally crushed by his comments was an occupational hazard. About halfway through, I think someone taught him the "compliment sandwich" approach, because he'd ALWAYS preface everything with something complimentary, no matter how much of a stretch it seemed ("you're making progress" and "you've got some interesting ideas" were popular with me) before launching into his scathing, soul-destroying explanation of why nothing you'd said worked. Nice guy, but he'd driven at least two other grad students out of the program entirely...
