The numbers vary enough that I can believe a poll came out with a 64% tally. The old trope about "lies, damn lies, and statistics" is too well known for me to disregard. For purposes of analyzing politicians' behavior, it's enough to note that even the lowest polls show that this is an issue on which there's surprising popular support. Most people don't agree that much on anything. Politicians reflect that popular consensus, for better or worse.

My view on the death penalty is that often, in practice, it is given out too haphazardly and in cases where it's not genuinely merited (assuming that you believe it can ever be genuinely merited; I do, but understand that many people, particularly on this site, don't think even a Ted Bundy deserves death). But sometimes, once in a rare blue moon, it seems appropriate to me.

So I'm ambivalent. I will probably always be ambivalent. If I ever actually have to handle a death penalty case, I'll probably be ambivalent then.
