I would be intrigued to know an example of one political figure who was handed absolute power, and then gave it up. Ever.

Why would a political figure give up absolute power?

Obviously, if they're in politics, they feel they have ideas on how to make things better (no matter how deluded or just plain wrong the ideas are).

So, once they are given "absolute power" they aren't likely to abdicate the throne until they are satisfied with the result and confident with its permanence...and I haven't seen many examples of successful, lasting utopias in human history...
