I think I was 13 or 14 when I saw my first metal show. I went with my older brother and a family friend. It was at this local basement bar in Calgary called "the underground", very fitting.
The main attraction that night was a band from Vancouver, 3 Inches of Blood. My brother had got me into them, so it was pretty neat to see them with my brother.
I had never seen a mosh pit before, a stage dive or people dangling from the roof, and suddenly I was in the middle of all of it . The energy in that room was amazing to me. At one point the band had to ask every one to calm down because the crowd was kicking and knocking instruments over.
Since then, Ive gone to move live shows, in bars, festivals, stadium shows, illegal venues, then you can shake a stick at.
A few years later when I was 17 I even joined my first band, jumping off stage, chugging booze , stealing peoples hats and continuing that energy that I witnessed at my first show.
I was only fitting that one year ago, in Vancouver, I went to there last show before they broke up. It was an exciting time, seeing that band move from a tiny basement in a bar to the lavish commodore ballroom with a sold out show.
Now that i live in Vancouver, sometimes i see these lads around, I'll always think back and remember that night that started it all.
