I visited Thailand on two quick package trips from Kuala Lumpur exactly 8 years ago. Niether trip included Bangkok, sop I can't help you there. And all I leaned to say was "sah-way-dee-kopp" and bow. I visited Phuket (Patong Beach), Phang Nga Bay (Koh Phi Phi) first, then Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai/Golden Triangle. The Phuket flight was full, while there was only 15 of us on the trip to Chiang Mai! I plan to return there some day! For now, I've given $500 to tsunami relief.
If you don't wish to visit Phuket just now, try Koh Samui. I haven't been there, but I've heard that it's truly very nice.
i hate when you visit a different place and the locals try to take advantage of you. next time they try to rip you off hit them with a stick! maybe that will help convince them you are not to be triffled with!
