That sucks man, sorry to hear it.

Ever read Tom Robbins? That crazy fucker's writing always inspires me. Jitterbug Perfume or Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates should do the trick.

Sounds like it's time for you to earn some decent coin and get on with your new life and lifestyle, you done the burn now it's time to earn, good luck.

I'm totally with you.. wtf is with designing a cover?

When you become a famous writer, can you have nothing on your cover. Just a black jacket.

I completely understand this stage at uni. It's fucked up.

Honestly, I think the best way to approach everything to do with your degree at this point is just by reminding yourself that you've put this much into it, you may as well bring it home, baby.

And the mock-up cover actually is relevant to your life as an author as the cover you end up placing on the book has a lot to do with how well it sells and where the bookstores place the book (you know, goth-lookin' goes in one section, happy covers go in another) and where your potential publisher sees the book heading. The more you can envisage as an author, the better a concept you are likely to have, the more sell-able your book will be to your publisher and the more likely your book will reach the intended audience and therefore be purchased by said audience and not by some idiot who had no idea they were reading work like yours and hates it and tells everyone about that. Even if you don't necessarily design it (though I know authors who do), it is important to understand what is good and bad about a cover so when you're sent a design, you can veto it very very quickly, or make really constructive suggestions to the publisher, so that you avoid the pitfalls stated above.

I say this only as I'm learing a lot about publishing and editing through my role as a judge for the Aurealis Awards this year and my friends who are newly published authors in Australia. Plus, I have always had a dream of being an editor and have soaked up heaps of info over my years of fawning after same. wink

I totally agree with your assessment of action but as you say, I'm not you and as a result I just can't do that! I am totally client focused and so recognise that the client needs the work completed, regardless of how screwed I get in the meantime. *sigh at my stupidity*

I think the best solution is for the company to tell the client more realistic turnaround times. I find that a lot of the problems come from unrealistic deadlines and NOT ones set by the client, but ones set by my crazy company out of some desire to "do better" be better or whatever. IMO, if we just managed expectations and did what we could within reasonable time frames, the client would be happy regardless and we'd actually meet deadlines rather than run behind them like crazy people, thereby making for fewer errors (so less expense for company in terms of insurance and payouts), less workers actually required to do the work (so less expense for company in terms of salaries), happier clients (so more work in future, increase revenue for company), etc, etc.

Sometimes having a psychology degree and a particular interest and experience in management/marketing/organisational psych can be more of a problem than a help. I see the problems, and the solutions, but have no power to put them in action. Sometimes I wish I was blind.

However, I'm doing my best to work a change within (or wreak havoc, whichever you like) by discussing these changes with others in management, with HR, with marketing team, etc, etc. The process has started...
