9/11 and the Money It Made
It's been five years now since September 11 and millions are still
paying the price. Whether it's from the war in Iraq, growing tensions between
America, Iran, and North Korea, a massive growing hatred for Americans
all over the world, or it's the amount of money made each year by
selling items to "commemorate" the events of 9/11. Never in my life
has such a horrendous tragedy made so much money. The absurd
exploitation of the events of 9/11 seem to go largely unnoticed, or
perhaps people are just too scared to speak out about it, which is
ironic since being able to speak your mind is one of the most American
things one can do.
Why is America so obsessed with 9/11? Why did 9/11 spark such an
aggressive movement of patriotism? Not long after the towers fell,
anyone who said anything opposing bush or America was labeled as
unpatriotic, or un-American, or even called at terrorist supporter.
Remember what happened to the Dixie Chicks or even Michael Moore when
he was speaking out against Bush at the Oscars? Americans were so
ready to burn these people at the steak, but were just as willing to
turn a blind eye to the fact that companies were making millions off
9/11.
Since the tragedy hundreds of different products have been made and
hundreds of different varieties of these products have been made as
well. Dozens of flags with the silhouette of the towers have been
produced, and even sales for normal flags increased, because not having
a flag in your front yard meant you didn't support your country.
Thousands of patriotic and 9/11 bumper stickers, shirts, pins, hats,
buttons, plaques, paintings, photographs, coins, and paperweights have
been made and sold in the name of 9/11. Along with all these products,
dozens of movies and T.V. specials or documentaries have been produced
as well. Movies like "World Trade Center" staring Nicolas Cage, and
"United 93" have made millions in the box office, and when these movies
come out on DVD they are bound to make millions more.
It is high times for these companies today. A sure way to make a
profit for anyone willing to forget their conscience. I can't count
how many times I have heard advertisements for a new documentary or
news story about 9/11, or even advertisements about items being sold
that declare some slogan saying "WTC, we'll never forget," as if
Americans would ever forget. Even without these products or movies,
America will always remember those who died and will always mourn the
worthless violence that took place, but as long as 9/11 memorabilia
sells they won't ever let us forget.
