years of sociology lectures are tumbling in my head right now. this brings to mind the theory that whether you're successful or not lies solely in how much motivation one has to do so. it really is an american idea. it takes the blame off of businesses and the government for for not providing people with financial security. instead it makes the individual believe they are in the rut they are in because they didn't try hard enough to overcome it. and that's not to say that i believe the ones on top have a debt they owe to society, but there's a reason this thought was put into place and widely spread.
this is an *awesome* little essay. it plays with a fun little coincidence to add a little order to the world in a thoughtful way. it's just a great visual metaphor.
re: evil advisors. yea .... i dunno that academics has MORE shit than any other kind of "profession," but it does have its own flavor of that "office politics" tedium that is the bane of white collar work.
i think my goal will be to have as few academic friends as possible...
yeah, things are picking up. getting better. i just grit my teeth and try to keep my head above water. remember that i'm blessed. remember that it's not the end of the world, no matter how much it looks like it.
Hey. I was leaving a comment on Marigold's journal entry, and I saw your comment there. I'm curious as to what you mean by some fishy "inside and out." Inside and out of what?
....wow. I hadn't heard of any of that stuff (I don't really frequent the boards: this site is all photosets and journals for me) but I dug around a bit, and just... wow. I had no idea that level of drama permeated this site.
geography is really cool. it's more like sociology - a bit more theory driven and a bit more willing to ask "fun" questions (there is an *aesthetic* element that comes into play, encouraging philosophical thinking i think). and geographers do like EVERYTHING - just any old problem they pick up and start to work on, relating the question to space. it's really really cool.
