Tell us about your first job.
My first job was at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte NC. When I was a senior in high school I had dual enrollment with the local community college, by the time I graduated I was already second level nursing assistant so I was able to get this job right after graduating.
You learn all about stuff in school, but until you see it for yourself it's really not the same. I have two stories that I am sure you will laugh at.
I got a new admit to my hall, I was told by the nurse to go put this lady's catheter in....no problem I thought, I do these things perfectly. WRONG! I go in and prepare the sterile tray with all the necessary items to preform this task. now it's time to pull back the covers, well apparently the nurse hadn't read the chgart first (like she is required to). I pull back the covers to find a penis as well as a vagina, where to put the catheter????? I politely excused myself saying that I had forgotten something. (please don't take this as me having a problem with her, I was too embarrassed to ask which to use) I went to the nurse, who had still not read the chart as evident by her surprised face. I had to get the nurse to do it, I was too shy to ask. Keep in mind I grew up under a rock almost, raised by "church going" people more like a cult, even talking about something like that would be wrong, it was hard to start doing these "wrong" things.
It's another catheter day, this time on an 80+ y/o man. Again I got myself all set up, and pull back the covers for a surprise, this old man is laying there with a boner. You are taught to politely excuse yourself when this happens, give them some time for it to go down and return, as they aren't supposed to be put in while hard. A little while later I return to find, yes it is still up. This happens several times, finally I tell the nurse what is going on..she looks in the chart to find he has a penile implant, it's never going down. I had to return and put it in as the old man sits there with a smirk on his face lol...in my head I'm thinking if I was this man I would be laughing so hard right now!
