Land of the Dead is an homage to b-horror from a time where movies like these could be tolerated as theatrical releases. To be honest it met my expectations, which were gore and zombies. But this really isn't enough to justify anything more than, at most, a straight to DVD release... maybe a Sci-Fi channel TV movie.
Character development is restricted to, essentially, the "king of the zombies/ gas station attendant zombie". The movie is jam packed with ancillary characters who have few lines and less free will (see the crew of the Dead Reckoning). The plot leaves one unfulfilled, as Sean put it, like the entire movie was supposed to be a part of a bigger plot.
On a positive note, there was just about every possible zombie type. There was a clown zombie, a baseball player zombie, a butcher zombie, a Santa zombie, the works! (As I write this I realize that zombies are mostly characterized into "types" by what they're wearing. I'm sure there are some social implications in this somewhere.)
In conclusion, I wish I could have about 4 or 5 of my 9 dollars back now.
