I'll stick to the furniture part of that: if you're not fussed (clearly not mattresses here), try windows of local shops for those 5x7 cards they have up, and Tesco/Asda/whatever also have some. Second hand stuff is usually a good go.

Furniture: You could look around for a furniture recycling place. They sell cheap stuyff, and sometimes it's nice. A washdown with bleach and a lick of paint and you've got some nice furniture that's not the smae as everyone else has.
Washing Powder: Fairy is nice. It's non-biological which someone told me was the important thing about itchy washing powder.
