Watching movies...It's what I do, if only I could get paid for it...

First, the bad. Finally broke down and rented (that's rented, I escape with some dignity intact) Shrek 2. Eh...There were a few memorably cute moments, most involving Puss in Boots, but the movie itself was little more than a mildly pleasant diversion. This was the number 1 comedy in America? I thought that was the 2004 election whatever

And now the good. Several years ago I saw the French film, Girl on the Bridge. Beautiful and romantic, I fell in love immediately. Sadly, it was only available on VHS. After joining SG's Foreign Film Club (Join Now!) I saw a listing for the film and a post that all region playable versions existed on DVD. Mine arrived a couple of nights ago.

Our winsome heroine (the girl on the bridge) is ready to throw her life away, plunging into the icy water below, when she meets the rough hewn hero who saves her life. Turns out he makes a habit of trolling the bridges looking for suicidal young women to recruit as his asstistant. He is always on the look out for fresh talent because he is a knife thrower, and accidents happen. More bad luck or has fortune smiled on these 2 for once?

Normally I find the whole idea of these "Winter / Spring" romances repugnant and chauvanistic...But only when Americans do it (Gere, Redford). For some reason, with the French (or maybe the storylines are just better) it seems OK.

If you like this, you will also like The Good Thief, which is Neil Jordan's remake of the French film Bob Le Flambeur. Nick Nolte has not been this good since Affliction. The Good Thief always makes me smile. Both this and Girl on the Bridge are fairy tales in their own right.
