My hatred for university has reached entirely new levels, or the stupid people in them.
I thought that university was supposed to be a place where people go out to achieve higher learning. Teach themselves how to accomplish their goals in life. Work on their weaknesses and come out a better person.
I did not think that it was a place where it is fun to spread rumours about people you hardly know. Normally I wouldn't be upset by this. Its not that I don't care what people think, but generally I don't believe rumours have much validity or much effect. Except when I found out today that someone was attempting to convince a friend of mine that I was a rapist.
When I heard this I became VERY very angry. I have never heard such a strong accusation come in the form of a rumour. "Oh well I heard from this person, that he's a rapist." A logical person would think through such a statement with the eventual conclusion that if it was true, I'd probably be rotting in jail right now like any dirty son of a bitch rapist should. Not only does it deface the person who is being called a rapist in a very serious horrible way, it also dismisses the severity of rape. It is completely insensitive for those who have actually been raped to talk about it in such an every day manor.
I have helped many friend of mine recover from the feelings of being abused, sexually and otherwise. To be conglomerated so easily into the group of the abusers because someone is too fucking dumb to think before they speak appals me.
I would never speak something so horrible of a person, even if I had the slightest belief that it was true. I would talk to them directly. I would confront them and make them aware that such ill words were being spoken of them, because nobody deserves to have such a horrible accusation stirred up upon someone out of thin air. Never in my life have I even thought of doing such a thing and I am disgusted at the thought.
I was shocked how stupidity can blow things out of proportion so easily. This is why I HATE working in theatre, the rumour mill turns faster than truth. You stop being a person, and you only are a shadow of what everyone else says about you.
I hope that those stupid enough to say such things get hit by a truck.
