Definately learn to backpack. Especially if you live out West. You'll have access to places most people never get to. You'll experience beauty, grandeur, solitude, serenity you'll never forget. There will be some discomfort, no doubt (sore feet, aching legs or back, cold, wet etc.), but its worth it. You won't regret it.

By the way, I'm doing great. Loads of work, but what else is new... These days I have a lot of "Only in L.A." kinda moments. This city is like no other city in the world. At times, I think it revolves around its own axis.

I agree with Faux that L.A. has it's own axis; I'll even go a step farther and offer that it has it's own consciousness as an organic entity, complete with the superstructures of personality and all their attendant baggage.
