Don't go back to western lit. Keep going. Read Wild Ginger by Anchee Min, Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie, The Lost Daughter of Happiness by Geling Yan, White Snake by Geling Yan, Red Poppies by Alai (essential), The Dragon's village by Yuan-Tsung Chen, Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Ma, Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian, Colors of the Mountain by Da Chen, Sounds of the River by Da Chen. When you are finished with those, start on Japan. You may never return to Wetern Literature...as you can see, I'm the wrong person to ask.

Did you know Cat Powers double LP is released this month? I'm absolutely drooling.

Oh, Across the Nightingail Floor by Lian Hearn ( the author is western, but it takes place in a semi-fictional but very well researched Japan) The first in a projected trilogy and quite stunning in my opinion.
