Richard Flanagan's "Gould's Book of Fish". Just came out in paperback. Torturous and bleak. Damn funny. Has a Werner Herzog sort of thing going that I think you'll enjoy.

I think they've hurt it by going with black and white for all the illustrations, and eliminating the multicolored text in the softcover edition. But, hell, whadda I know.

Go to the library, read a chapter or two.
