The first boy I danced with was also my first 'boyfriend'.

I was in grade seven and I really liked Matthew who was a boy in my class with blond hair. He was also shorter than me, as were almost all the boys at that point. It was the last time in my life I felt tall!

His best friend Mike wanted to 'date' my best friend Lauren. So Lauren and I decided it would be fun if she dated Mike and I dated Matthew. I remember calling him and asking him to 'go out' with me. He said yes and that was pretty much the end of the conversation.

We only did two things together. Go to the movies with Mike and Lauren and dance with Matthew at the school dance.

It was awkward of course. We were doing that middle-school dancing where we were at arms length with each other and I was towering over him. Of course I don't think I did any non-awkward dancing with boys until I discovered alcohol.

I don't remember why we 'broke up' but I think we were only 'going out' for two weeks. It might have ended because Lauren and Mike 'broke up'.

Years later Matthew and I sat next to each other in Calculus class in our last year of high school. We never ever talked about being each others first date.
