I work a desk job Monday through Friday that allows me to be done working no later than four in the afternoon most days. Sometimes, though, I get a phone call from my boss at my old retail job -- selling comic books, believe it or not -- asking if I can help cover a shift someone is going to be missing. Being the idiot that I am who can never say "NO!" (there's a story involving a zebra that starts in a similar manner), I agreed and sacrificed a few hours of my Saturday to peddle comic books to people.
After more than a year of not selling comic books, I had forgotten some things that I relearned today.
1) Fan is short for fanatic.
2) Not a lot of attractive women buy comic books in Salt Lake City, Utah.
3) Not a lot of people who bathe buy comic books here, either.
4) Most people don't know what the hell a comic book is.
5) I really, really hate working face to face with the general public.
6) Comic Book Men is a bullshit, fictional show. Working in a real comic book shop is nothing like that.
Still, it wasn't all bad. I did get to see two or three people who I hadn't seen in a long time that I missed bullshitting with. My favorite customers were the ones who wouldn't talk about comic books. Mind you, I enjoy talking about them -- but I when I worked there, I was around them all day every day, and I liked talking about other things once every now and again so I didn't go insane and kill a lot of people.
But, it was kind of nice being back into the fray -- even if I'm not a nerd.
Hmmm... this was much more pointless than I meant it to be.
