I saw Jeff Buckley play in May of '95 in San Francisco. The support band were a new and little known outfit named Soul Coughing. The crowd loved them. That is all. smile
machfive:
Aw, Mike's a sweety. He was an ass when he was on drugs but seriously, the man is a big fucking teddy bear these days smile

I am allowed to comment on my own interview, right? (Sheepishly checks the Unholy SG Rulebook)
tawnya:
fucking awesome! i worship m.(ike) doughty! seriously, he's one of the only people that has ever really gotten into my head musically. i like having him in there. smile

czarina:
holy fuck I wasn't expecting this. Honestly. He is probably my favourite poet. I did an assignment on quotes and 3 of the 10 were SC / MD quotes.

saw doughty & band in chi-town at the double door a few weeks back, and my gawd did they smoke...i still have one of the tunes he mentioned -- "looking at the world through the bottom of the well" -- stuck in my head...part of me wants it to stay there, and part of me wants to throw on some '70s cheese rock to make it disappear...at any rate, if anybody has any tapes of a doughty show, and would be into burning me a copy, i'll give bux for shipping and the blank cd, plus an extra taste for the love...

What a pleasant surprise. I do like the Mr. Doughty. We're seeing him tomorrow night, in fact!
radiobastet:
Yay! This was great! I still play my Soul Coughing CDs incessantly. One of my very first online handles was RubyVroom. I will definitely be checking out Mr. Doughty's latest endeavors! Thanks!! smile
phedre:
I love Doughty. And he worked with Dan Wilson?!?!?! Life is so complete for me now.
evanx:
He's "met woman at work". Heh, I love this guy!

Rock on, brother!
gen0x:
mike doughty is totally hoppin'. i went to a show a few months ago at a local bar in town after waiting patiently for a year and it was definitely worth it. some kids at the show found a bucket and piled up all their shoes in it and put it on stage before he came on. the infamous bucket of shoes.

i took a ton of great pictures, so if anyone wants to see them let me know. love
twwly:
we listen to mike doughty every day at the tattoo shop.

love the music. love it. i had no idea there were other albums than skittish, and i can't wait 'till i have money so i can get my hands on them.

biggrin
remj:
I saw him for the first time on Nov. 18th, at the Seattle show. A couple of my co-workers bought me the ticket, and said I was going with them.

It was a good show at the Crocodile - I didn't know what to expect...I had heard him on a friend's CD player non-stop when I was visiting for a comic convention in July...I hate to admit it, I didn't get sucked in.

So work pissed me off the day after, and I called up those friends in San Diego, flew down there that weekend for his LA show on Sunday night. Such goodness. I thought it couldn't be better...except by seeing it twice in a week.

"For the love....of my black woman."

i got to see soul coughing toward the end of 99. they were always on my underappreciated bands list. unfortunately i was a retard and they only clicked for me about a month before they broke up.
since then i have been a most rabid fan.
i have heard all but 4 soul coughing songs in existence (out of songs that were recorded, at any rate.) if anyone has an mp3 of "henry rollins has a very large neck indeed", "angels are 2 men on a mission", "jersey devil", and the one i'm forgetting i will love you forever if you could hook me up. i would be only too happy to share of my hard fought collection of 90 or so non album tracks i have collected, including alternate versions and unreleased stuff from the skittish sessions.
that is all.

reprazent.
machfive:
I have all the unreleased songs you desire thatzac, and gen0x, I would love to see pics! Huzzah! robot
fivetwo:
i'm so stoked, i play skittish EVERYDAY and all the old SC stuff too, that tattoo shop would not be the same without Doughty

heh, i was at that Double Door show too!! that was excellent. he has such a wonderful charisma about him, and it was really cool to hear the fleshed-out versions of his solo material with the band. But I do miss SC in a bad way, I was lucky enough to see them once before they split (on their last tour too, the El Oso one). They were just such a phenomenal band, and each member contributed something unique and special to the mix. The music is such a cohesive, flowing whole in a way which is increasingly rare these days: between Sebastian's booming upright bass, Yuval's amazingly creative and complex drumming, Mark's crazy samples & keyboards, and Doughty's lyrics, vocal delivery & 'gangadank' guitar, there wasn't a weak link in the bunch. but alas..... great interview! what a pleasant surprise to see that on the site smile

twwly:
where did he go on here - no longer public account perhaps?

tryst:
I heart m. doughty. casssiotones..........

everytime people see the soul coughing posters in my room, they think I'm a stoner. what's up with that? Am I missing something?
kayla_:
