Alright.. so to avoid other topics..
GAMES!! really are starting to suck.
I swear I'm going to quit playing video games.
It is getting to the point post returning to casual gaming (from working in video games) where I can't find the time to play as much as I did when being paid to.
Maybe that's ultimately it.
Regardless.. Mike Capps.

You saw what happened when we went from the Unreal Engine 2 to 3 generation in terms of the complexity of making games and the budgets that came along with that,
Yeah you get Mass Effect 1-2-3 instead of Super Mario Bros. (which could be taken out of context. I have nothing against that walking stereotype from the company that does nothing interesting and expects everything they make to print money.. We'll see how well that continues to work with Wii U, when it isn't built to really leverage Unreal Engine 4 in a meaningful manner).
The meaningful manner of which I speak remains breaking the 4K barrier.
Nintendo loves 480p. They are fond of 720p.. they might even break into 1080p with Wii U, but are always a generation behind, leaving it to 3rd party companies to support their hardware.. how?
That 4K barrier, and scare mongering like work smarter AND harder, and costs will be doubled (which should be expected anyway).. can't end up being insurmountable.
The market for these products IS there, and it has ballooned like crazy given Xbox and PS3.
Even Valve is chipping into the living room with their rumored hardware and out in the open software initiatives.
Again.. for consumers, 1080p is the nexus for all home entertainment. There's little need for higher resolution.. and arguable the real short term issue for next-generation games is frame rate (to support 3D).. and for game to take another step forward in graphical fidelity.
I mean consider some of the best games of the current generation, double the frame speed and tweak lighting and physics. You'd end up with something worth paying twice as much for?
Not necessarily. Not for the end user to have to put down over $100 for game.
I'm looking at this all and going.. no way. Samaritan and Agni's Philosophy, and hell any game that tries to hit that kind of quality bar, but doesn't add anything meaningful to the game but then expects to double the price?
Craziness.
At the end of the day all a publisher needs to know is that they can make their budget back AND make a profit.
They can't fuck around in the next generation with shit that won't make any money.
We've see how that mentality has already led to the demise of some genres, and the ridiculous amounts of cookie cutter shooters and racing games.
How many studios can really afford to do that? How many big name studios have shut down because of this shift from Unreal 2 to Unreal 3.. and then Unreal 4.
The true crime is not what's become of the industry really, but the loss of really talented developers who saw this all coming and couldn't figure out a way to make the financials line up.
So many intellectual properties shelved and put to the dust because, really there's no money to waste making great games anymore.
It's all cheap trash or going for broke, time and again on another shooter.
I'm tired of shooting and killing things. As such, that's practically all the major games being released that in principal I can't stand.
Looking ahead though.. sure I'd like to see a 4K Mass Effect using Frostbite 2 with in game characters as detailed as Epic's Samaritan Demo.. I want to definitively say that without the RPG roots of the game, exploration, and Drama of installments past (the first two games). Keep it. I don't care anymore. And I'm not blowing a penny over $80 again to just run around (because fuck vehicles right?) shooting things.
