I am exceptionally tired of hearing people say "Well, what do you want me to do about it? Or what can I do about it?" Why don't you start with trying to come up with a solution instead of just shrugging it off like you don't give a fuck? Solutions don't just come out of thin air for things. At least they haven't in my life. I mean, how much time will it really take to sit and THINK for a second before just shrugging and saying... "Opps, that sucks. Can't do anything about it. It's not my problem and even if it is I can't fix it."
Don't be that person. Not only is it lame, it's an excuse for not using your mind. Everyone has an excuse for everything and not only that but they think it's FUNNY. It isn't funny, it's pathetic. Don't complain about life if you aren't willing to fix it.
And, don't leave comments on my blog saying how "I'm so right and people are stoooopid." That is hypocritical and it makes you sound like an idiot. EVERYONE, myself included, has been this person, but that doesn't mean that for once we can't just stand up and offer solutions instead of complaining or thinking that it isn't your problem to fix.
I know, why don't each one of you go out and do something for someone other than yourself today? How about helping find solutions to the things you bitch about. You know:
Health Care
Homelessness
Disease
Animal Abuse
Drug Abuse
Or any other million and one things in the world that is bigger than any one person.
I recently discovered that because I ran the heater in my house for a month (because it was freezing) my electric bill was 300 dollars. For One Month At first I thought, wow, this must be wrong. Alas, no. It wasn't wrong. What is going on that you can't afford to stay warm at night anymore. The price of everything is skyrocketing and there are less and less jobs, people who have jobs aren't getting raises, but the price of living is going up like crazy!
My parents for instance are on a fixed income. They are on disability and my step-father was a Vietnam Vet for fucks sake. Yet, they get about 600 dollars A MONTH. Could you live on 600 a month? Would you even find that humanly possible? Obama decided that they weren't giving people on disability a raise this year because the cost of living isn't 'going up'. Well, Mr. Obama, I disagree with you. I'll mail you MY electric bill if you want, and then you can tell me that the cost of living isn't going up. And, it isn't just the electric. Groceries are twice as much, taxes are more, water is more, gas... well, we all know how that goes. How exactly are people supposed to LIVE? It's to the point now where people have to decide between their house payments and buying food.
I keep hearing people say... "OH, it's all going to change and be better now." but someone show me some of that change would you, and while your at it: Stop sitting around waiting for the change to come to you and DO something about it. People are starving while they are trying to stay warm.
And yet, you have the whole other chunk of the populace who are out there taking advantage of the government service. Women who keep having hoards of children so they can get more and more welfare, or people getting disability when they can work and don't need it. Having a bunch of babies doesn't mean you should be entitled to government money, or free housing. If you can't take care of them, don't have them. If you do, they should be taken away until you can take care of them. By continuously giving these people money to breed we are just overpopulating the world and making more people who see that it's ok to live of the government.
Seriously, I know women who have 4 kids and get all kinds of money and food stamps and spend their days getting fucked up, smoking weed, getting drunk, popping pills..... and then collecting more money next month. Yes, please, give these fuck-ups some more money so they can get wasted and 'forget' their birth control, so they can have more babies, so they can get more money, so they can get wasted and 'forget' their birth control, so they can have more babies, so they can get more money, so they can get wasted and 'forget' their birth control.... And I'm not just talking about women either. It takes TWO.
And, then you have the shit-for-brains that are out there preying on this stupidity. That's a whole other something else right there.... blah.

It really seems like the major issue is that America as a whole has abandoned long-term thinking. We could fix many a thing if we just took a moment and looked at the long term; we'd see that over twenty years, having underfunded or simply removing the social programs that were in place from the end of the 30s to the end of the 70s may not have been the best idea (particularly considering the expansion of the gap between the top 1% and the rest of the country through the 80s, 90s, and 00s) and has led to the current disparity between the lower, middle, and upper class; the promotion of tax cuts and deregulation of business as a way to power the economy (despite the obvious proof that the worst intentions become the first actions in a deregulated business, just looking at the banking scandals in the 80s, the media monopolies and "dot-com" bubble over the 90s, and the housing and credit bubbles that came over this past decade), and a concentration with our news media to put the spotlight not on our current political goings-on but on scandals and the promotion of conflict and ratings-chasing. Rather than there being a significant gap between our actual national news and a "tabloid" news show, they've slowly but surely merged - which may or may not be an after-effect of the slow monopolization of the media by three or four conglomerates.
The whole national mindset is on the easy, quick fix. It's not on bundling down and working your ass off to make things better. Our politicians promote this quick fix (even as Obama reminds people, as he did before being elected, that "this isn't going to be easy"), our art reflects this, and polls show people looking to the easy solution first, despite the dividends being much smaller than if they went without and hunkered down and just worked for the bigger and longer lasting payoff.
I guess if I were to put it down to a single metaphor, the United States population is looking for quickies rather than an all-nighter; getting that quick sensation of sex is more important than getting an orgasm now. Or, to be less frank and a little more debonair, the United States population would rather have a series of one night stands than a real relationship, because a real relationship is going to have good and bad points and ups and downs, and who wants that? We just want to feel good all the time.
How would we fix this? We'd have to overhaul education. The height of American optimism and the furthest strides we made came during that post World War II period, where the promotion of education was at its highest and where schooling seemed to at least strive to make people graduate. If we increased the pay for teachers, if we increased educational funding a hundredfold, if we did everything we could as a country to promote schooling as a good and basic part of the American lifestyle, we'd end up with a population that would be able to think for themselves rather than accept and parrot the words and images that are thrown at them day in and day out. We'd have people that could at least go out and get a basic job, lightening the load on welfare and allowing a more 1:1 ratio with social workers and those who truly need the help. And let's face it; the "welfare queens" who are having kids in order to better feed their addictions and live without working, are actually the ones who need the help the most. These are the lowest on the totem pole, and a country is no better than the lifestyle of their worst citizen. Remember that they are abandoned, and that their entire upbringing is 99% more likely to have been fucked up than yours could have been.
Of course, then we arrive at healthcare. The only proper way to take care of the sick in a country is to take care of everyone. For free. Basic healthcare - the guarantee that you won't die of sickness unless you simply refuse to go and have yourself checked out or worked on - needs to be something that exists in this country. When people even above the poverty line fear going to a doctor because something may be wrong that could cost them $100,000, it is a flaw that needs to be corrected. Imagine if the same people "living off the government, having 4 or 5 kids" could have seen a doctor regularly over that time. Imagine if she had been properly educated about the use of contraception.
Imagine if she had been given a basic chance, the same as any other citizen, no matter where she was born or under what circumstances her family lived in, without worry to having to lose everything to a medical bill or to a lack of education. Imagine if she had gone through school, knowing that the only way to succeed in a way that is secure and safe is to work hard and not give up.
Consider that we're the last country attempting to take care of people without worry to cost. Even the monster of human rights violations, China, is trying to cover 1.3 billion people from dying from basic disease without batting an eye to the bill. Even they attempt to educate everyone.
The sooner America realizes a corporatist and ADD culture is nothing but a way to doom, the sooner things can get better. The sooner the percentage of functionally illiterate people shrinks, the sooner the fear of the doctor vanishes, is the sooner we can be the country we once imagined ourselves to be.
